java version doesn't create thumbs correctly, makes them small icons

I've been having issues with the latest image uploader 5.1 java version. When users try to upload large photos, the thumbs the uploader creates aren't being processed correctly, the become small system icons! I thought this problem was fixed a long time ago? We generate thumbs of the client side but it seems they are failing on the java platform? Seems to work fine with IE/ActiveX version. Is there a fix anywhere? Thank you.
